Built from a Jewish mother’s perspective
One of the most heartbreaking realities I face as a Jewish mother is worrying about my children’s safety in the very places that should feel sacred, welcoming, and safe. Seeing armed security at our schools and synagogues brings reassurance, but it is also a sobering reminder that Jewish institutions face threats that many communities never have to consider.
When antisemitic incidents occur, the impact extends far beyond the immediate event. Families hesitate. Attendance declines. Children become more aware of the dangers associated with being Jewish. Over time, fear can quietly erode the institutions and traditions we are working so hard to preserve.
As a school safety advocate, I have spoken with rabbis, heads of school, security professionals, and parents across the country. I have heard the same concern repeatedly: Jewish schools have invested in cameras, access control, emergency planning, and security personnel, yet many classrooms are still missing a critical layer of physical protection: bulletproof doors.
Magen Yeladim, Hebrew for “Shield of Children,” was created to help close that gap. The initiative helps Jewish schools fund bulletproof classroom doors that look and function like traditional school doors while providing meaningful protection when it matters most. In an emergency, the classroom door can become a critical barrier between an attacker and the children inside, buying valuable time for first responders to arrive.
But Magen Yeladim is about more than doors. It is about protecting Jewish education, strengthening Jewish life, and ensuring our children can live their Jewish identity without fear. Today, I am asking you to help remove the greatest barrier standing between Jewish schools and this protection: funding.

Jewish schools are carrying a security burden that continues to grow.
Jewish institutions across the country have invested in cameras, access control, emergency planning, security personnel, and training. Those measures matter. But many schools still face one critical vulnerability: classroom doors were not designed to withstand modern rifle threats.
Grant funding can be slow, competitive, and burdensome for schools already stretched thin. Our children cannot wait for a lengthy funding cycle while the need exists today.
Fire safety taught us something important. We do not wait for a fire to install alarms, sprinklers, or emergency exits.
Preparedness must come first. Protection is put in place before a crisis, not after.
